The 10 best places to stay in New Zealand

We know that everyone – including New Zealand Prime Minister John Key – loves a good Top 10, so we took a look through the more than 15,000 accommodation reviews on Travelbug and dug out the ten top places to stay. We used a combination of the number of reviews, the review percentage from the last 12 months and the number of bookings (and some secret sauce calculations), so these places are both popular and highly-rated, like Daniel Carter.

Travelbug has all accommodation types, and it is great to see so many different types represented in the top 10, including hotels, motels, holiday parks and backpacker hostels!

So well done to the top 10:

Pullman Auckland 1. Pullman Auckland
In the heart of Auckland, this hotel offers true 5-star service and seems to please the Travelbug reviewers and is popular for bookings as well.
Ibis Tainui Hamilton 2. Ibis Tainui Hamilton
If you’re heading to Mooloo country, you’d do well to grab a room here. They occasionally have excellent specials and the ratings are excellent.
 Ibis Wellington 3. Ibis Wellington
One of my personal favourites, I’ve always been impressed by the staff and you often see the GM around the lobby saying g’day to guests. Great location too.
Amora Hotel Auckland 4. Amora Hotel Auckland
You may know this one by its former name (Duxton), on a relatively quiet tree-lined street away from the real chaos of downtown Auckland and well-liked by travellers.
James Cook Grand Chancellor Wellington 5. James Cook Grand Chancellor Wellington
Our second Wellington entry in the Top 10, this hotel has been a consistently high-quality property in the capital for years.
 Astray backpacker 6. Astray
Great to see a backpacker enter the Top 10, this one in Rotorua keeps its guests happy and offers single rooms from just $35!
Mountain Chalets Motel Twizel 7. Mountain Chalets Motel Twizel
Here’s the motel that comes up trumps, with reviewers making consistent of good service and warm, cosy accommodation.
Sudima Hotel Lake Rotorua 8. Sudima Hotel Lake Rotorua
Rotorua makes a second appearance on the list, and no wonder with this lakefront property.
Copthorne Hotel and Resort Bay of Islands 9. Copthorne Hotel and Resort Bay of Islands
Northland travellers love staying in this hotel right on the doorstep of the Treaty grounds at Waitangi.
Te Aroha Holiday Park and Motels 10. Te Aroha Holiday Park and Motels
A holiday park rounds out the Top 10, and this one has free internet and hot pools on site!
