Join The Big Egg Hunt!

Image bigegg
The Whittaker’s Big Egg Hunt is in full swing across the country. The eggs are listed on Trade Me, so have a look – there are some cool designs by great artists, and all the proceeds go to Starship. If you want to win a heap of chocolate – more than one human needs – take a selfie with one of the eggs and flick it through to the team at Trade Me before Good Friday.

We’ll have a chuckle and then send the winner a big ol’ choccy hamper.

Stay somewhere eggcentric this Easter

With Easter and ANZAC Day falling so close together this year, a few days of annual leave gives you a 10-day break. Make the most of this chance and stay somewhere interesting. Here are a few options for weird and wonderful accommodation on Travelbug.

Old convent

Get thee to a nunnery

Whether you want to solve a problem like Maria, or just stay in an amazing place, this old convent will suit you just fine.

Woodlyn Park

Planes, trains and hobbit holes

One of our favourites. After you’ve caved and rafted in Waitomo, rest up for the next day’s action in one of these wacky rooms.

Circa60

Get your retro on in Martinborough

Martinborough is cool anytime, but this place takes cool to new heights. Make sure you take your martini supplies.

Mudcastle

Claim your throne in this mudcastle

Want to act out your own personal Game of Thrones? Try this castle on for size. I’ll be Jon Snow, you can be Joffrey!

Thanks for putting up with the awful puns. Have a great April, a wonderful Easter and get out around this gorgeous country of ours!

Cheers,

Cricket, dodgy decisions and fake travel reviews

There are two things that confuse me at the moment: why the Indian cricket team still don’t allow the decision review system (DRS) and why sites like Trip Advisor still allow unverified reviews. Both are examples of not using systems that exist to make things better for everyone. An unusual subject link, but bear with me.

Twelve months out from the 2015 Cricket World Cup, and with India touring New Zealand at the moment, I recently watched the highlights of NZ’s glorious victory over Australia at Eden Park at the 1992 World Cup. As I watched, I was taken aback at some of the poor decisions the players had to put up with. The most glaring examples were a dodgy LBW decision and a run out that I’m sure would these days be adjudged “not out” by the third umpire. here you see Dean Jones just making his ground before Ian Smith smashed the stumps:

Out or not? Hard to say with no third umpire...

Hi everyone,

We are now halfway through January, the end of the school holidays is nearing, and we still have some pretty sharp accommodation deals on offer. There are also some excellent family-friendly activity deals throughout the country, and a special family giveaway for one of Christchurch’s leading activities.

The Auckland and Wellington anniversary holidays are upon us, so we’ve profiled some popular getaway destinations to make the most of the long weekends.

See this week’s sweet deals

Anniversary weekend getaways

Whitianga

Pohutakawa-lined beaches are synonymous with the Coromandel, and by late January the crowds are thinning out. This seaside town makes a great base to explore the region and is a stone’s throw from Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove. Boat and snorkelling trips leave daily from Whitianga too.

Taupo

New Zealand’s largest lake is a summer hotspot you’ll enjoy, whether it’s fishing, boating, soaking in hot pools, a round or two of golf, or hiking the Tongariro Crossing. Consider taking a boat tour to check out the Maori rock carvings too, either on a sailboat, steamboat or catamaran – oh, the options!

Wairarapa

Aside from great food and wine, Wairarapa has a load to offer. The coastline of the Wairarapa is rugged and beautiful, the coastal village of Castlepoint enjoys a safe swimming beach, Pukaha Mount Bruce is home to the only white kiwi in captivity, and no trip is complete without a visit to the Tui Brewery.

Arrowtown and Wanaka – hidden gems of New Zealand

Last month I visited Arrowtown and Wanaka for the first time. All for work but it was hard to miss the amazing scenery and even in meetings, spectacular views were found from almost every office window.

Arrowtown is a charming riverside town steeped in gold mining history. Well-preserved cute cottages and overhanging shop fronts reminiscent of an old western town is the main drawcard but the best way to explore this area is to hire a bike from Arrowtown bike hire and discover both the town and surrounding nature at a leisurely pace.
